MATERIALS FOR DIGITAL CONTROL COURSE ATTENDEES

We are offering two short courses in the summer of 2007. The first, Introduction to SMPS Modeling and Control, is a two-day course that covers basic converter operation and standard analog controller design. The second, Digital Control in SMPS, is a three-day course that covers digital controller design techniques including hands-on laboratory experience.

The digital control course assumes a background knowledge in basic converter operation and analog control. The two courses are offered consecutively in the same week, allowing participants to take both courses if desired.

Introduction to SMPS Modeling and Control

This 2-day course will give participants a basic knowledge of converter operation and standard analog controller design, so that those without previous experience in the areas of switched-mode power supply (SMPS) modeling and control will have the background needed for the follow-on course in digital control of SMPS. The two-day short course begins with a short summary of switching converter operation. Converter modeling techniques are then discussed, along with controller and compensator design. Numerous examples will be worked in class. Graduates of the course will understand how to perform small-signal ac converter modeling, and to compensate their feedback loops.

Dates: August 6-7, 2007 (Monday and Tuesday)

Instructor: Robert Erickson

Registration fees

CoPEC members $1,200
Non-members $1,500

Course contents

  • Two days of lectures
  • Bound copy and a CD of all presentation materials
  • Continental breakfast and buffet lunch each day
  • Daily parking permits

Digital Control in Switched Mode Power Supplies

This 3-day course will give participants a fundamental understanding of discrete-time systems, digital controller design techniques, and hands-on laboratory experience working with digital controls in high frequency switching power converters. Enrollment is limited due to space limitation in the labs.

Dates: August 8 - 10, 2007 (Wednesday - Friday)

Instructors: Dragan Maksimovic and Regan Zane

Registration fees

CoPEC members $1,700
Non-members $2,200

Course contents

  • Three days of lectures and hands-on laboratory experiments. In the laboratory, two-person teams will work with a prototype system consisting of a switching converter controlled by a Xilinx FPGA development board.
  • Hard copy and soft copy of the course materials
  • Continental breakfast and buffet lunch each day
  • Dinner (on Thursday)
  • Daily parking permits
