ECEN 5274 - Radar Science and Techniques

3 credit hours

Catalog Description: Radar fundamentals. Scattering by precipitation and atmospheric turbulence. Long-wavelength radars and the dynamics of the middle and upper atmosphere. Design of meterological and clear-air radars. Profiling atmospheric winds, temperature, and humidity by radar. Ionospheric sounding using ionosondes and incoherent-scatter radars.

Prerequisites: ECEN 5254, Radar and Remote Sensing, and ECEN 4242, Communication Theory

Textbook: Class notes and journal articles.

Goals: To impart to the student detailed knowledge for the design of atmospheric radars.

  1. Review of radar fundamentals.
  2. Scatter by hydrometeors and atmospheric turbulence.
  3. Applications of radar I.
  4. Design of meteorological radar systems.
  5. Applications of radar II.
  6. Radar data analysis.
Computer Usage:
  1. Atmospheric data analysis using Unix environment.
Laboratory Projects:
  1. Radar system design.
