ECEN 5166 - Guided Wave Optics

3 credit hours

Catalog Description: This course builds up the concepts necessary to understand the guided wave optical systems of today and those proposed for the future. Topics covered include semiconductor lasers, fiber optics, and integrated optics.

Prerequisite: ECEN 5156, Physical Optics

Textbook: Guided Wave Optics, Mickelson, Van Nostrand Reinold,1993.

Reference: Light, Vol. 2, Haken; Optical Waveguide Theory, Snyder and Love; additional references from the literature.

Goals: The course emphasizes unifying principles, especially those provided by coupled mode equations which can be used to describe diverse phenomena from laser dynamics to mechanically induced polarization coupling in fibers.

Topics:

  1. Guidance in planar structures.
  2. Semiconductor lasers.
  3. Optical fibers.
  4. Integrated optics.
Computer Usage:
  1. A computer project.
Laboratory Projects:
  1. None.
