ECEN 4645 - Introduction to Optical Electronics

Catalog Description: This course provides students with a background on the devices used in optical communications and lasers including an introduction to lasers, Gaussian optics, modulators, nonlinear optics, optical devices, and other related devices.

Prerequisite: ECEN 3410, Electromagnetic Waves and Transmission

Textbook: Anmom Yariv, Optical Electronics, 5th Ed., Oxford Press.

Course Objectives: To provide students with a background on the devices used in optical communications and lasers.

Topics:

  1. EM theory, including anisotropic materials.
  2. Ray matrix and optical waveguides.
  3. Gaussian beams.
  4. Optical resonators.
  5. Interaction of light and atoms.
  6. Laser theory and examples.
  7. Second harmonic generation and parametric oscillators.
  8. Electro-optical modulators.
  9. Noise in optical detectors.
  10. Semiconductor lasers.
Class Schedule: 3 hours of lecture per week

Contribution of course to meeting Criterion 4, the professional component: This course provides 3 semester hours of electrical engineering topics consisting of engineering sciences and engineering design.

Relationship of course to program outcomes: This course is not required and is not included in outcomes assessment.
