ECEN 4645 - Introduction to Optical Electronics

Prerequisite: ECEN 3410, Electromagnetic Waves and Transmission
Textbook: Anmom Yariv, Optical Electronics, 5th Ed., Oxford Press.
Course Objectives: To provide students with a background on the devices used in optical communications and lasers.
Topics:
- EM theory, including anisotropic materials.
- Ray matrix and optical waveguides.
- Gaussian beams.
- Optical resonators.
- Interaction of light and atoms.
- Laser theory and examples.
- Second harmonic generation and parametric oscillators.
- Electro-optical modulators.
- Noise in optical detectors.
- Semiconductor lasers.
